What is SMART?

It's a mobile application for iOS and Android* that can track manure applicatons within a field. In addition, it displays No Manure areas within a field, and will alert you if you are currently within a manure prohibited area.

  • Displays Manure prohibited and Winter manure prohibited areas on your mobile device to help you see and avoid spreading in them.
  • Keeps track of manure applications while you are out in the field by mapping your manure spreader's path.
  • Sends application records to SnapMaps for import to SnapPlus (optional).
SMART App Transition Updates

Two important changes will impact the availability of the SMART app in 2025. These are:

  1. Changes to support for the underlying technology that SMART is built on
  2. The transition to the web-based version of SnapPlus (V3)

The original SMART app was designed to work with SnapPlus Version 2 (desktop software). The app was officially released in 2022. The technology used to develop the original version of SMART is no longer officially supported by Microsoft. Because of this, there will be no further updates released for the current SMART application. SMART will eventually be dropped from the Google and Apple application stores at the platform's discretion. Rather than update the current SMART app to be compliant with changing rules, we have decided to instead develop a new version of SMART that is compatible with the new web-based version of SnapPlus.

A second important change is that SnapPlus, the nutrient management planning software that connects with the SMART app, is transitioning to a new, web-based version (V3). V3 is currently available for training and will be available for writing and submitting nutrient management plans for the 2026 crop year. The desktop version of SnapPlus (V2) is still available but is no longer being updated. All users should start planning their transition to V3.

How does this impact SMART users?
  • Users with SMART already installed will be able to use the application, but support for the current version will be limited as app updates will not be possible with the current technology.
  • Users who upgrade devices or get new devices may not be able to download the current SMART app, depending on when platform-specific application store listing policies change.
  • A new version of the SMART app, compatible only with the web-based V3 of SnapPlus, is in development. Users will need to download this new version of the app when it becomes available.

System Requirements
As of November 2024, Google Play store applications require a device running Android version 14 or newer. The Apple App Store officially requires a minimum iOS version 16.1. Issues with SMART specific to older versions of Android or iOS will not be addressed, as those platforms are not officially supported.
*Some Android users have reported issues with location tracking while using the app. Please let us know if you have trouble by reaching out to support@snapplus.wisc.edu.
